You gotta resurrect the deep pain within you and give it a place to live that's not within your body. Let it live in art. Let it live in writing, let it live in music. Let it be devoured by building brighter connections. Your body is not a coffin for pain to be buried in. Put it somewhere else. - Ehimeora

Brainspotting, a powerful form of psychotherapy that can help individuals overcome a wide range of emotional and psychological challenges.

What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a cutting-edge form of therapy that was developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003. It's based on the idea that our brains can naturally identify and process emotional experiences, but sometimes our brain gets "stuck" and can't fully process certain traumatic or painful memories. Brainspotting uses visual and auditory cues to help clients locate these "stuck" areas, and then supports the brain in processing these experiences, leading to a greater sense of emotional relief and healing.

What can Brainspotting be used for?

Brainspotting can be used for a wide range of issues, including trauma, anxiety, depression, addiction, chronic pain, and more. It's particularly effective for individuals who have experienced a traumatic event, as it allows the brain to process the experience in a safe and controlled environment, reducing the negative impact it has on the person's life. Brainspotting is also useful for athletes, performers, and anyone who wants to enhance their performance by addressing the psychological factors that may be limiting them.

What do trauma symptoms look like?

Most people will experience trauma in their lifetime whether it’s a car accident, abuse or neglect, the sudden death of a loved one, a violent criminal act, exposure to the violence of war, or a natural disaster.

While many people can recover from trauma over time with the love and support of family and friends and bounce back with resiliency, others may discover the effects of lasting trauma, which can cause a person to live with deep emotional pain, fear, confusion, or posttraumatic stress far after the event has passed.

In these circumstances, the support, guidance, and assistance of a therapist are fundamental to healing from trauma.

Trauma Symptoms

Avoidance Symptoms

  • Avoiding specific locations, sights, situations, and sounds that serve as reminders of the event
  • Anxiety, depression, numbness, or guilt

Re-experiencing Symptoms

  • Intrusive thoughts, nightmares, or flashbacks

Hyperarousal Symptoms

  • Anger, irritability, and hypervigilance
  • Aggressive, reckless behavior, including self-harm
  • Sleep disturbances

Negative Mood and Cognition Symptoms

  • Loss of interest in activities that were once considered enjoyable
  • Difficulty remembering details of the distressing event
  • Change in habits or behavior since the trauma

Research has proven psychotherapy to be the most effective form of treatment for trauma. Most commonly, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing(EMDR) and Brainspotting are used in treating trauma.

What happens in a typical Brainspotting session?

A typical Brainspotting session lasts around 60-90 minutes and involves a licensed therapist who is trained in the technique. The therapist will work with the client to identify specific targets or areas where they are experiencing emotional or psychological distress. This might involve discussing a specific event or memory that is causing the client to feel stuck.

Once the target has been identified, the therapist will use visual or auditory cues to help the client locate their "brainspot." A brainspot is a specific point in the client's visual field where they experience a heightened sense of emotion or physical sensation. By focusing on this spot, the brain is able to process the experience more fully and release the negative emotions that are associated with it.

During the session, the therapist may use a variety of techniques to support the client, such as mindfulness, guided imagery, and somatic experiencing. The goal is to help the client feel safe and supported while they process their emotions, allowing them to move towards greater emotional healing and resilience.
